For most travelers, the wild Giant Panda is a myth — solitary and hidden in the misty mountains of western China. This 10-day expedition brings you as close as possible. Start at Bifengxia Panda Base, then journey into the Giant Panda National Park for six full days of tracking with reserve rangers. Learn to read panda traces — bamboo feeding marks, footprints, scat — and encounter the “umbrella community” of Sichuan Takin, Golden Snub-nosed Monkey, Golden Pheasant, and Temminck’s Tragopan. Conclude at Wolong Panda Base, deep in the panda’s heartland, where mother-cub interactions are a daily spectacle. This expedition demands strong fitness — full-day hikes at elevation through rugged, cold terrain. The reward is an experience few panda tourists ever get.

Six Full Days of Wild Panda Tracking: Hike alongside reserve rangers through permitted zones of the Giant Panda National Park, learning to identify feeding marks, footprints, scat, and scent-marking traces.
Two Panda Bases, Two Experiences: Begin at Bifengxia Panda Base (spacious, uncrowded, semi-free-range) and conclude at Wolong Panda Base (in the heart of panda habitat, famous for mother-cub interactions) — two distinct perspectives on panda conservation.
The Umbrella Community — 430 Vertebrate Species: Track Sichuan Takin herds, observe Golden Snub-nosed Monkey troops, and search for Asiatic Black Bears, Golden Pheasants, and Temminck’s Tragopans in pristine mountain valleys.
Chengdu Cultural Bookends: Sip bowl tea among bamboo groves at Wangjiang Bamboo Park, watch a Sichuan opera face-changing performance, and explore the historic alleyways of Kuanzhai Alley and Jinli Street.
A Challenging, Authentic Expedition: Full-day hikes at elevation through rugged terrain — one of the most physically demanding China wildlife tours we offer, and one of the most rewarding.

Overnight: Chengdu | Meals: D
Day 2: Chengdu → Bifengxia Panda Base → Panda Habitat
Morning visit to Bifengxia Panda Base — a spacious, semi-free-range facility with far fewer visitors than Chengdu. Observe pandas in a near-natural mountain setting. After lunch, drive into the Giant Panda National Park (5.5h). En route, your expert delivers a lecture on Giant Panda ecology and the companion species ahead.
Overnight: Panda Habitat Lodge | Meals: B/L/D
Days 3–8: Wild Panda Tracking — Six Days in the Field
Six full days hiking through the habitat with your reserve ranger. This biodiversity hotspot records 430 vertebrate species, 103 mammals, and 310 birds — home to over 60 wild Giant Pandas, 1,000+ Golden Snub-nosed Monkeys, and 1,200+ Sichuan Takins.
Daily focus: panda trace reading (feeding marks, footprints, scat, scent marks), mammal tracking (Sichuan Takin, Golden Snub-nosed Monkey, Asiatic Black Bear, Tibetan Macaque, Chinese Goral, Tufted Deer, Yellow-throated Marten), birdwatching (Golden Pheasant, Temminck's Tragopan), and bamboo species identification. Evenings for reviewing findings and preparing next-day routes.
Overnight: Panda Habitat Lodge | Meals: B/L/D daily
Day 9: Panda Habitat → Wolong Panda Base → Chengdu
Morning departure from the habitat. Stop at Wolong Panda Base, located deep within the panda's heartland. Famous for its breeding program, Wolong offers exceptional opportunities to see panda cubs and observe mother-cub interactions up close — a heartwarming contrast to six days of wild tracking. Arrive in Chengdu by evening.

Q1: What are the realistic chances of seeing a wild Giant Panda?
A: Wild Giant Pandas are extremely elusive. Even with six days of expert-led tracking, a direct sighting is never guaranteed. What we can promise with high confidence is finding genuine panda traces — feeding marks, footprints, scat. You will very likely encounter companion species: Sichuan Takin, Golden Snub-nosed Monkey, and others. This expedition is for those who value the field research journey as much as the destination.
Q2: How physically demanding is this expedition?
A: Very demanding. Full-day hikes (6–8 hours) at elevation through rugged, uneven terrain. Cold in winter and early spring. Strong fitness is essential. If unsure, consider our Red Panda Tracking Expedition → as a more accessible alternative.
Q3: Why two panda bases — Bifengxia and Wolong?
A: Each offers something different. Bifengxia is spacious and uncrowded — ideal for quiet, detailed observation. Wolong sits inside the panda habitat itself and is famous for mother-cub interactions. Together, they give you a complete picture of panda conservation from semi-captive care to wild habitat.
Q4: What should I pack?
A: Sturdy waterproof hiking boots, layered clothing (fleece + insulated jacket + waterproof shell), trekking poles, headlamp, daypack, sun protection, insect repellent. Telephoto lens 400mm+ recommended. Extra batteries — cold drains them fast.
Q5: What wildlife besides pandas can I expect to see?
A: Very high probability: Sichuan Takin (herds), Golden Snub-nosed Monkey (troops), Tibetan Macaque. Frequently: Chinese Goral, Tufted Deer, Yellow-throated Marten, Golden Pheasant, Temminck’s Tragopan. Occasional: Asiatic Black Bear.
Q6: Can I join as a solo traveler?
A: Yes. Many participants travel solo. The small-group format and shared challenge of daily hiking naturally build camaraderie.

Apr 2026 • SoloFrom the start, everything was well organised and thoughtfully planned. The team was very responsive and made the process easy, while still allowing flexibility to shape the experience around my interests.
On the ground, both the guide and driver were excellent. Paul, my guide, was incredibly knowledgeable, dedicated, and genuinely passionate about wildlife. He went out of his way to make the experience special, always attentive and happy to share insights along the way. Sun, the driver, was equally professional and reliable, making all the travel smooth and comfortable.
What stood out most was their care and attention. I always felt well looked after, and it was clear they were genuinely invested in making the experience as meaningful as possible rather than just following a set itinerary.
The time spent exploring the forests and searching for wildlife felt authentic and unhurried, which made a big difference. It never felt rushed or overly structured, and that allowed for a much more immersive experience.
Overall, a very professional and thoughtful team, and a great choice for anyone looking to explore the natural side of Chengdu in a more personal and meaningful way.
