Why Choose CWT (China Wildlife Tour)

Unmatched Route Coverage: This is one of the few Qinghai wildlife tours that spans the full ecological gradient — from the Kham Tibetan highlands around Yushu, through the Xidatan corridor, to the desert steppe of Xiangride and the Qinghai Lake basin. In 12 days, you encounter ecosystems that most tours would require 3 separate trips to cover.

Triple Target Strategy: Unlike single-species tours, we pursue three high-value targets — Snow Leopard, Pallas’s Cat, and Przewalski’s Gazelle — each requiring a different habitat and tracking approach. This dramatically increases the overall wildlife reward of your expedition.

Conservation-Focused Expertise: Our guides are seasoned specialists in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau ecology, with deep knowledge of species behavior, seasonal movement patterns, and field tracking techniques. Every expedition contributes to local conservation awareness and community-based wildlife protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What is the best season for a snow leopard tracking expedition in Qinghai?

A: The prime window is October to early April, when snow leopards descend to lower elevations for prey and become more visible against the snowy landscape. Clearer skies and reduced vegetation further enhance spotting conditions.

Q2: How physically demanding is this 12-day Qinghai wildlife expedition?

A: This expedition is moderately strenuous. A significant portion of our wildlife tracking involves scanning from ridges and walking over rugged, uneven terrain at altitudes ranging from 2,780m to 4,293m. A good level of general fitness is essential — we recommend regular cardiovascular exercise (hiking, jogging, or cycling) in the months leading up to your trip. Our expert guides always set a comfortable pace, and your well-being is our top priority.

Q3: How do you manage altitude acclimatization on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau?

A: Altitude is the most significant factor on this journey. We mitigate its effects through a carefully designed itinerary that allows for gradual acclimatization, starting in Yushu at 4,293m. We move at a relaxed pace, ensure constant hydration, and provide nutritious, high-energy meals. Our team is trained in recognizing and managing altitude sickness, and we carry a medical kit including oxygen for emergencies.

Q4: What wildlife can I expect to see besides snow leopards?

A: This expedition targets three high-value species: the Snow Leopard, Pallas’s Cat, and the critically endangered Przewalski’s Gazelle. Beyond these, you can expect to encounter Wild Yak, Tibetan Antelope, Kiang, Blue Sheep, White-lipped Deer, Goitered Gazelle, Lynx, Himalayan Brown Bear, Tibetan Fox, and Wolf — along with birds such as the Black-necked Crane, Himalayan Griffon, and Saker Falcon. Each day reveals a different cast of Qinghai wildlife as you traverse four distinct ecosystems.

Q5: What are the accommodation and vehicle standards in this remote region?

A: In towns like Yushu, Golmud, and Xiangride, you will stay in the best-available 3- or 4-star hotels with clean, comfortable, en-suite rooms and heating. Our vehicles are modern, spacious, and reliable 4x4s specifically chosen for the rugged Qinghai-Tibet Plateau terrain, featuring large windows and a pop-up roof for excellent wildlife viewing.

Q6: What camera gear should I bring for this Qinghai wildlife photography expedition?

A: This is a world-class destination for Qinghai wildlife photography. We recommend a DSLR or mirrorless camera with a telephoto lens of at least 400mm (600mm or more is ideal for snow leopard photography). A wide-angle lens (16–35mm) is perfect for the vast landscapes. A sturdy tripod, extra batteries (cold temperatures drain them faster), and weather-proof gear are essential.

Q7: What is your commitment to conservation and responsible travel?

A: Conservation is at the core of our operations. We practice a strict “leave no trace” policy, employ local guides and drivers to support the local economy, and donate a portion of every trip fee to snow leopard conservation initiatives and community-based protection programs. We maintain a respectful distance from all wildlife to ensure our presence does not disturb their natural behavior.

Q8: What is the group size, and who will be leading the expedition?

A: Group size is limited to a maximum of 8 participants, ensuring an intimate experience with minimal environmental impact. Each expedition is led by an expert naturalist and tracker, working alongside a skilled local Tibetan driver-guide — combining in-depth scientific knowledge with deep, on-the-ground expertise of the region’s Qinghai wildlife, culture, and terrain.

Above and Beyond in Every Way – A Truly Exceptional Wildlife Experience

Mar 2026 • Solo

I recently traveled with China Wildlife Tour on a fully customized one-week mammal trip to the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, and I cannot recommend them highly enough.

From the very beginning, communication was outstanding – swift, professional, and genuinely customer-focused. Planning the trip with them was seamless and enjoyable.

What truly sets them apart, however, is their level of care. Just before my flight to Xining, I fell ill and reached out for guidance. Instead, Wendy personally picked me up from the hotel, accompanied me to the hospital, and stayed for hours to assist with translation. She only left once her colleague Karen arrived, who remained with me until I was discharged about 10 hours later. I have never experienced such compassion and dedication from a travel agency.

I proceeded with the trip, which exceeded all expectations. My guide, Philip He, was exceptional – knowledgeable, flexible, and deeply committed to ensuring the best possible experience. Without me even asking, the team upgraded my accommodation from a basic ranger station to a nearby hotel for added comfort, which meant extra effort, long drives, and less sleep for Philip.

They also handled last-minute flight changes on my end effortlessly – nothing was ever too much trouble.

From a wildlife perspective, the trip was a big success too. While sightings can never be guaranteed, Philip's expertise and local connections made all the difference. We saw an incredible range of species, including Tibetan fox, wolf, lynx, Pallas's cat, kiangs, raptors, Przewalski's gazelles, partridges, and more.

An outstanding experience from start to finish – professional, thoughtful, and truly above and beyond.
