Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What is the best season for a snow leopard tracking tour in Qinghai?

A: The prime window is November (−10°C to −15°C), when snow leopards descend to lower elevations for prey and fresh tracks are clearly visible on snow. A secondary window is July–August, which offers opportunities to observe cub-rearing behavior.

Q2: How physically demanding is this snow leopard expedition?

A: This is a high-intensity expedition (★★★★☆). Expect daily 4–6 hours of off-trail hiking at 4,800m altitude, extreme weather exposure (−20°C to intense UV), and stays in remote, non-electrified zones.

Q3: What is the snow leopard sighting probability?

A: Based on 48 expeditions (2013–2025), our November sighting rate reaches 85%, with typical behavior including blue sheep predation and territorial marking. April–May offers a 78% rate focused on mating and cub nurturing, while July–August stands at 65% for high-altitude summer movement. These results rank among the highest snow leopard tracking success rates in China.

Q4: What cultural experiences are included in this Qinghai tour?

A: This expedition immerses you in Kham Tibetan heritage through three highlights: the Gyana Mani Stone Pile — the world’s largest with 2.5 billion carved sutra stones; Black Pottery Crafting, a millennia-old UNESCO intangible heritage; and the Epic of King Gesar oral recitation, a living cultural tradition.

Q5: What gear do I need for this snow leopard tracking expedition?

A: The following gear list is tailored for high-altitude winter conditions on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau:

I'm an avid wildlife photography hobbyist, and this was the second trip with CWT team to look for animals in China. Over a week we saw over 20 species of mammals, many of which are species that photographers would dream of seeing: wolf, Pallas's cat, snow leopards, Eurasian lynx! The team runs a tight operation, and has service at the core of the business. I understand that there are a variety of tour types that are offered, some city-based and some truly wildlife-based. I was truly impressed at how the guides were more eager to spot animals than we were in our journey through Sichuan and the Tibetan Plateau. Can't wait for the third trip with them next year!
