Overview

The towering limestone karsts of Southwest China act as countless isolated “ecological islands,” driving a spectacular explosion of evolution. This expedition is a dual-focus deep-dive into the Nonggang National Nature Reserve, a sacred ground for Chinese entomologists and a global hotspot for birders.

We will explore the profound impact of “geographic isolation” on speciation. From the Chinese Giant Stick Insect—one of the largest insects on the planet—to the elusive Nonggang Babbler, a bird found nowhere else on Earth. We will traverse mossy limestone forests and dark subterranean rivers to uncover the masters of camouflage and the secrets of cave adaptation. With a rhythm optimized for nature’s clock—dawn for birds, midday for insects, and night for the creatures of the dark—this is a comprehensive survey of a unique ecosystem.

Highlights

· Quest for the “Panda of Birds”: Seek the Nonggang Babbler (Stachyris nonggangensis), a species described by science as recently as 2008 and restricted entirely to these limestone forests.

· Insect Giants & Mimics: Search for the massive Chinese Giant Stick Insect (Phryganistria chinensis) and the exquisite Leaf Insects (Phraortes spp.), observing their incredible camouflage adaptations.

· Subterranean Exploration: Explore safe, non-core zones of Karst caves to observe troglobites (cave dwellers) like Blind Cave Shrimp and eyeless Cave Ground Beetles, learning about evolution in darkness.

· Aquatic Insects & “Water Tigers”: Discover the Giant Dobsonfly (often called the “Water Tiger”), a fierce aquatic insect with impressive mandibles, alongside jewel-like Damselflies in crystal-clear streams.

· Cross-Taxa Wildlife: Encounter globally Critically Endangered White-headed Langurs and the mysterious White-eared Night Heron.

Day-by-day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival & The Limestone Cliffs

PM: Arrive in Nanning airport and meet your private guide and driver. Then we transfer to Nonggang National Nature Reserve (about 2 hrs driving). Enjoy the scenery of the iconic “Fengcong” (peak cluster) karst landscape.

Late PM (17:00–19:00) White-headed Langur Encounter: Head to the observation cliffs at sunset. We will observe the White-headed Langur (*Trachypithecus leucocephalus*) returning to their roosts. The golden-hour light provides a stunning backdrop for these critically endangered primates.

Night: Check-in at the Eco-lodge inside the reserve. Safety briefing and gear check.

Overnight: Nonggang Eco-lodge .

Day 2: The Babbler & The Camouflaged Stick

AM (07:00–11:00) Nonggang Babbler Search: We hike into the core limestone forest habitat to find the Nonggang Babbler. This bird, endemic to this region, hops on mossy rocks and limestone cliffs. We will also look for the vibrant Indochinese Green Magpie.

Midday (11:00–14:00): Lunch and rest at the lodge.

PM (14:00–17:00) Insect Camouflage & Phasmids: Switch focus to entomology in the same forest. We search thickets for Stick Insects (e.g., *Baculum* spp.) and Leaf Insects, observing how their mimicry serves as a primary defense against the birds we saw in the morning.

Night (20:00–22:30) Introduction to Light Trapping: Set up mercury vapor lights at the lodge to attract night-flying moths and beetles.

Overnight: Nonggang Eco-lodge.

Day 3: Caves, Streams & The Water Tiger

AM (08:00–11:00) Forest Birds & Beetles: Walk the trails to look for forest birds like the Black-naped Monarch and Hainan Blue Flycatcher, while simultaneously scanning tree trunks for Longhorn beetles and jewel beetles.

PM (14:30–17:00) Cave & Aquatic Survey: Visit a safe, accessible cave area to observe Cave Ground Beetles (often eyeless and translucent) and Blind Shrimp. Then, move to a crystal-clear Karst stream to search for aquatic insect larvae and Damselflies.

Night (19:30–22:30) Stream-side Megalighting: We set up high-powered lights near the stream. This is the best chance to see the massive Giant Dobsonflies (*Acanthacorydalis*), attracted to the light from the water.

Overnight: Nonggang Eco-lodge.

Day 4: Giant Stick Insects & The Night Heron

AM (06:30–10:00) The Mystery of the White-eared Night Heron: Visit a deep reservoir area within the reserve to search for the elusive White-eared Night Heron (*Gorsachius magnificus*), one of China’s most endangered birds.

AM (10:30–12:00) The Chinese Giant Stick Insect: Based on local data, we travel to a specific micro-habitat to find the Chinese Giant Stick Insect (*Phryganistria chinensis*), an insect that can reach over 60cm in length.

PM (14:30–17:30) The “Bird” Katydid: We hunt for the Blue-backed Shield Katydid (*Acanthoplus* spp.). When it flies, it reveals brilliant blue wings that resemble a small bird, a perfect example of startle coloration.

Night (20:00–22:30) Final Night Walk & Herping: A comprehensive final light trap to record nocturnal beetles and moths. We will also walk the trails to look for reptiles like the Tokay Gecko (*Gekko gecko*).

Overnight: Nonggang Eco-lodge.

Day 5: Synthesis & Departure

AM (08:00–11:00): A final session to research for Nonggang Babbler and the Stick Insects.

Noon: Farewell lunch.

PM: Transfer to Nanning or Chongzuo Airport for departure.

Q&A

Practical Information & FAQ

Q1: Is this trip suitable for non-birders?

A: Absolutely. While we target specific birds like the Nonggang Babbler, the itinerary is heavily focused on general natural history, insects, and landscapes. The visual spectacle of the Karst formations and the “alien-like” appearance of stick insects appeals to all nature lovers.

Q2: How difficult is the hiking in the Karst landscape?

A: The hiking level is Moderate. We stick to established trails and paths used by researchers. However, Karst terrain involves some elevation gain and walking on uneven rocky surfaces. You do not need to be a mountaineer, but you should have reasonable fitness and sturdy footwear.

Q3: What is the best season for this trip?

A: The ideal window is April to July. During this time, the forest is lush, insects are most active (especially before the peak heat of high summer), and many birds are still vocal and active.

Q4: Can we collect insect specimens?

A: We operate a strict “Observation Only” / “Photography Only” policy inside the National Nature Reserve. Collecting is prohibited without specific scientific permits. We encourage participants to “collect” memories through high-resolution photography.

Q5: Is cave exploration safe?

A: We only visit the safe, twilight zones of non-core caves. You do not need technical caving skills. However, a good headlight is essential as the ground is wet and slippery.

Q6: What are the accommodations like?

A: We stay in a local eco-lodge/guesthouse inside the buffer zone. It is clean, comfortable, and environmentally friendly, but please do not expect 5-star luxury. It offers the best access to the wildlife areas.
