Step into the only tropical rainforest in China — a vivid “Gene Bank” of biodiversity located on the Tropic of Cancer. This expedition takes you deep into the lush jungles of Xishuangbanna, where we combine the vibrancy of daytime butterflies with the mystery of the rainforest at night.
Designed as an engaging “Nature Classroom,” this tour is perfect for families and budding naturalists. From the massive Birdwings gliding in the canopy to the exquisite Owl Butterflies resting in the shade, we will observe over 50 species of butterflies. You will learn to spot eggs on host plants, witness the phenomenon of butterfly puddling, and explore the hidden world of nocturnal insects like Fireflies and Beetles. Join us for a low-intensity, high-reward journey into the heart of the rainforest.
· Butterfly “Base Camp”: Explore the world-renowned Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden. Witness the massive Golden Birdwing (Troides aeacus) and the incredible Dead Leaf Butterfly (Kallima inachus), while learning about their life cycles and host plants.
· Canopy Walk & Flight of Giants: Walk the 36-meter-high skywalk at the Parashorea Chinensis (Wangtianshu) Reserve to get eye-level with canopy-dwelling Swallowtails and look for “spectral” butterflies like the Junonia Hierta.
· Bioluminescent Night Tours: Experience the magic of the rainforest after dark. We will search for glowing Lampyrid Fireflies (short-emergency fireflies) and Rhagophthalmid Beetles, alongside tree frogs and reptiles.
· Deep Rainforest “Butterflying”: Venture into the pristine Naban River Watershed for a professional-level field survey. Use light traps to attract and photograph rare moths like Actias ningpoana and beetles that are never seen by day.

Day 1: Arrival in Jinghong – Gateway to the Tropics
Arrive in Jinghong and meet your private guide and driver, then we transfer to your hotel. Followed lunch, we will visit the Manting Park or Tropical Flower Garden to acclimatize to the humid climate.
Target Species: We begin with common yet beautiful urban species such as the Papilio polytes, Graphium eurous, and Colias fieldii.
Evening: Welcome dinner and introduction to the week’s “checklist.”
Overnight:Jinghong
Day 2: Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden – The Insect “Base Camp”
Morning: Enter the Botanical Garden, a biodiversity hotspot. We head straight to the “Butterfly Valley.” Our targets are the giants: the Golden Birdwing (Troides aeacus) and the Common Birdwing (Troides helena). Near streams, we will look for the incredible Green Dragontail (Lamproptera meges), known for its transparent wings and swift flight.
Afternoon: Focus on host plants to observe oviposition (egg-laying) behavior. We will compare the Plain Tiger (Danaus chrysippus) and Blue Tiger (Tirumala limniace) to understand mimicry.
Evening: “Dark Night Spirits” Night Tour. Search for Stick Insects, Katydids, and glowing Fireflies (Luciola).
Overnight: Menglun Town (Botanical Garden area).
Day 3: Parashorea Chinensis (Wangtianshu) Reserve – Canopy Walkers
Morning: Drive to the Wangtianshu Scenic Area. brave the Skywalk (36m high). This elevated position offers a unique vantage point to see Common Rose (Pachliopta aristolochiae) and Red-bodied Swallowtails (Atrophaneura polydorus) patrolling the canopy.
Afternoon: Hike the Philip Trail to observe rainforest phenomena like “strangler figs.” In the shaded understory, we will search for the master of camouflage, the Orange Oakleaf (Kallima inachus), and the spectacular Troides magellanus if lucky. We will also look for signs of wild Asian Elephants (footprints / dung).
Overnight: Mengla County or return to Jinghong.
Day 4: Naban River Reserve – Deep Valley “Butterflying” & Light Trapping
Morning: Venture into the Naban River Watershed National Nature Reserve, a pristine area less visited by tourists. This humid valley is perfect for “satyrines.” We will look for the Palm King (Amathusia phidippus) and the Common Evening Brown (Melanitis leda) in the dark bamboo forests. We also hunt for the tiny, metallic White Judy (Abisara bifasciata).
Afternoon: Rest at the station and look for amphibians like tree frogs.
Evening: Light Trapping Session. We set up a high-pressure mercury vapor lamp to attract nocturnal insects. This is a photographer’s dream, attracting Giant Stag Beetles, Rhinoceros Beetles, and colorful Moths like amazing Actias ningpoana.
Overnight: Naban River Guesthouse or nearby eco-lodge.
Day 5: Dai Village Nature Class – Agricultural Ecology & Culture
Morning: Visit a traditional Dai Village. We explore the farmland and orchards to observe butterflies adapted to human-altered environments.
Target Species: The Common Three-ring (Ypthima baldus) and Lesser Grass Blue (Zizina otis) are common here. We will also look for the Pale Grass Blue (Pseudozizeeria maha) and Mycalesis gotama. Learn about the Dai people’s “Holy Hill” belief system and how it aids conservation.

FAQ
Q: Will the rainy season affect the butterfly watching?
A: Not significantly. In fact, butterflies are very active in warm, humid weather. Rainy seasons (May-October) often bring out the best numbers, especially for species like the Glassy Tiger and Tree Browns, which prefer damp conditions. We schedule indoor activities during heavy downpours.
Q: Is the “Light Trapping” harmful to the insects?
A: No, we follow a strict “look, don’t touch” policy. The light is used to attract insects for observation and photography. Once the light is turned off, the insects return to the forest naturally. We do not collect specimens.
Q: Is this trip suitable for children?
A: Absolutely! This is designed as a family-friendly eco-tour. The walking is easy, and the vivid colors of the Golden Birdwing and the magical experience of seeing Fireflies usually captivate children instantly. It serves as a perfect introduction to tropical ecology.
Q: Why do we go to Naban River for the Light Trap? Can’t we do this in the city?
A: Naban River is a protected primary forest area with much higher biodiversity than the city. To see rare nocturnal creatures like Giant Stag Beetles or Moon Moths, we need to be deep in the pristine habitat where they breed.
Q: Will we definitely see the Golden Birdwing (*Troides aeacus*)?
A: The Golden Birdwing is a protected species in China, but Xishuangbanna has a healthy population due to the abundance of its host plant (*Aristolochia*). While wildlife is never guaranteed, the botanical gardens and Wangtianshu Reserve are the most reliable places in China to observe this magnificent giant.
