Xiao’an He — On-the-Ground Conservationist, Wildlife Guide & Photographer at Wolong Nature Reserve
Xiao'an He has dedicated his life to the wildlands of Sichuan. A graduate of 1988, he was assigned to the Wolong National Nature Reserve — one of the world's most important sanctuaries for the giant panda — and has remained there ever since, now serving with the Sichuan Wolong Management Branch of the Giant Panda National Park.
With over three decades of intimate knowledge of Wolong's terrain, ecosystems, and wildlife behavior, Xiao'an also serves as a local wildlife guide, leading research teams and nature enthusiasts on field expeditions into the reserve. From tracking giant pandas in bamboo forests to observing red pandas, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects in their natural habitats, he transforms every outing into an immersive learning experience.
An accomplished wildlife photographer and science writer, Xiao'an is a signed photographer with Southwest China Wildlife (西南山地) and a member of the China Wildlife Conservation Association. His lens captures the full spectrum of Wolong's biodiversity — mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects, and flora — while his writing brings scientific insight to a wider audience.
His work bridges field conservation, guided exploration, and public awareness: every photograph, article, and tour he leads serves as a window into the fragile ecosystems he calls home, inspiring others to value and protect China's wilderness.
