Wenhu Ma — Senior Forest Ranger, Wildlife Guide & Photographer at Tangjiahe Nature Reserve
Wenhu Ma has spent over two decades patrolling the forests of Tangjiahe Nature Reserve, an IUCN Green Listed reserve and WWF Grade-A protected area in Sichuan, renowned as one of the top destinations in China for observing giant pandas and other wildlife in the wild — with a wildlife sighting rate exceeding 90% in winter. As a senior forest ranger with the Giant Panda National Park, his daily work takes him deep into the reserve — inspecting habitats, tracking wildlife signs, and monitoring endangered species across terrain he knows like the back of his hand.
His intimate field experience has made him one of the most knowledgeable local wildlife guides in Tangjiahe. He has led research teams and nature enthusiasts on field expeditions through the reserve's diverse ecosystems, from lush valleys to misty ridgelines, sharing firsthand insights into the behavior of giant pandas, red pandas, golden snub-nosed monkeys, and a rich array of endemic birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects, and flora that call Tangjiahe home.
A passionate wildlife photographer, Ma has achieved what few ever do — photographing wild giant pandas on three separate occasions, along with an extensive portfolio of Tangjiahe's rare and endemic species. Every image he captures tells the story of a reserve he has devoted his life to protecting.
As a native of the region, Ma sees Tangjiahe not just as a workplace, but as a "homeland for wildlife" — one worth spending a lifetime to safeguard. His work bridges frontline conservation, guided exploration, and visual storytelling, offering visitors a rare opportunity to experience China's wilderness through the eyes of someone who has lived it every day for over twenty years.
